7650 -FUNDING REQUESTS FROM ORGANIZED CHARITIES
The United Way, the United Negro College Fund, and the Durham Public Schools Education Network will be the only organized charitable organizations permitted to raise funds from employees within the Durham Public Schools system. Although other school-related groups such as the PTA or athletic associations are free to make contributions to other charities, no other organized charity shall be allowed entrance into or be endorsed by the Durham Public Schools system. In no case may pressure be applied to raise funds. The endorsement of the United Way, the United Negro College Fund, and the Durham Public Schools Education Network by the Board simply provides an opportunity for all employees to participate in these joint community efforts.
Fund raising activities shall take place outside of the normal working day for staff and outside of the normal instructional day for students. Such activity will be strictly voluntary for school employees and students. In the event of a major catastrophe or during special food or clothing drives, with the principal's approval, receptacles for donations may be placed at appropriate places in school buildings. Any donation made under these conditions will also be voluntary on the part of the donor. The principal will ensure that efforts to promote these efforts shall not significantly interrupt the instructional program.
Students shall not be used to raise money for any school or non-school organization during school hours. Nor shall a non-school organization use the school name in raising funds for non-school programs at any time.
Payroll deductions for the charitable organizations mentioned herein are permissible.
