Durham Public Schools serves students in grades K-12.  Pre-Kindergarten is available only through the following programs.

Information for applications

 

Title I and More at Four

DPS PreK is designed for 4-year-old children who demonstrate great academic need ore are income eligible.  Durham Public Schools serves Title I PreK and More at Four children in 10 elementary schools. 

The following are requirements for application and eligibility for the program:

  • Child must reach age four by August 31 of the year he/she enters the program.
  • Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and child must be residents of Durham County (verification is required).  Residence verification can be one of the following legal documents:  deed to home, escrow papers, real property tax bill, or rental/lease agreement.
  • Parent must provide child’s birth certificate, updated immunization records, proof of residence and Social Security card.
  • A designated Durham Public Schools’ staff member must screen the child and conduct a parent interview as part of the selection criteria. 

Please consider the following information:

  • PreK hours are 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., five days a week.
  • Before and after school care are not available for preschool students.
  • Limited transportation is available based on home address and current bus routes.
  • Letters will be mailed by not later  than late July to inform families if their child was selected for the program, put on wait list, or not eligible for the program.

Exceptional Children’s Programs

All students who are determined as qualifying for Exceptional Children programs will receive specific service delivery based upon the Individual Education Propgram (IEP).

Montessori Preschool (Watts and Morehead Magnet School)

The Montessori curriculum includes a pre-kindergarten component.  Parents interested in having their children attend a Montessori school must apply through the magnet schools lottery.  Space is extremely limited due to the small size of these schools.
