About Driver Education

Student Driver on Gregson Street in Durham

DPS offers driver education throughout the year, as an after-school activity. Upon completion of thirty hours of classroom and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, students who are 15 to 17 years old are eligible to apply for a learner's permit at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in North Carolina. All Durham County students who are at least 14 1/2  years old and are enrolled in public, private, or home high school are eligible to take driver education in Durham Public Schools.
