Learner's permit

Now you're ready to start driving!

Once you have completed both the classroom and driving portions of driver education and are at least 15 years old, you can obtain a learner's permit. You must take the following to the DMV:

  1. the driver education certificate,
  2. the driver eligibility certificate (valid for 30 days),
  3. a certified copy of birth certificate or other proof of age, and
  4. social security card.

A parent or legal guardian must accompany you. If you pass a 25-question multiple choice test, a vision test, and a sign recognition test, you will be given a learner's permit which allows you to drive with a parent or legal guardian between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. for the first six months. After six months of driving without accidents or violations, you can drive at any time if accompanied by your parent or legal guardian.

Check the "Test Yourself" page for sample questions (with answers) and the "DMV" page for links to the DMV.
