Philosophy

Merrick-Moore is a traditional K-5 exciting, creative community of learning. Students are challenged to develop the life-long academic skills and social characteristics needed for success in middle and secondary school and beyond. We believe that we provide a supportive, well-structured, and well organized environment through uniform policies for homework, discipline, promotion, and communicating with parents. We further believe that every child, regardless of assessed or presumed ability, has the right to be given the opportunity to learn skills and ideas appropriate to grade placement and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study

Teaching

Merrick-Moore's instructional methods utilized in presenting the Standard Course of Study are traditional and based firmly upon research. All students are guaranteed access to the basic grade level curriculum in addition to opportunities for growth in character development and participation in the arts. Instruction consists of teacher-directed, whole-class lessons supported by textbooks, supplemental materials, and available technology. Students are taught to use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate mastery of basic concepts learned. Students who qualify under state guidelines for the Exceptional Children's Program receive additional instruction from teachers specially trained in that field. Students also benefit from other individual and small group experiences such as resource, and literacy. A school-wide discipline system promotes uninterrupted instructional time and exceptional student behavior.

Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students

Formal Academically/Intellectually Gifted services are offered to selected students in grades 4 and 5. These services include instruction in language arts and/or math. These programs follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study but with more emphasis upon composition and literature in language arts, and a faster pace in math. Students return to regular classes for the remainder of the day. Informal Academically/Intellectually Gifted services are offered to students in kindergarten through the 3rd grade through curriculum modification, advanced placement, and individual educational plans.
