Apply to Bull City Teaching Scholarship

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for the Bull City Teaching Scholarship Award:

  • Be accepted to enroll at North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) School of Education

  • Be one of the following:

    • A Durham Public Schools senior

    • A former DPS student applying to transfer from Durham Technical Community College (DTCC) to NCCU’s School of Education

Minimum Academic Requirements

  • DPS high school applicants or applicants with fewer than 24 hours of college credit must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.7.  While not required, we strongly encourage applicants to submit an SAT and/or ACT score.

  • Applicants with more than 24 hours of DTCC college credit must have a minimum of a 2.7 cumulative GPA.  Have not previously been licensed as a teacher.

  • Applicant must take and pass the Praxis Core from DTCC before entering NCCU if on a 2 year track from DTCC

  • Applicant must work for DPS for a minimum of four consecutive years

Bull City Teaching Scholar Awards

Forgivable loans may be awarded for use NCCU for 

  • DPS seniors:  up to 4 years

  • DPS graduates attending DTCC for Associate in Arts of Teacher Prep or Associate in Sciences in Teacher Prep    (student must graduate in two years)

Award amounts: up to $6000 per semester (12,000 per year).  Loan funds may be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books.

Bull City Teaching Scholars will be required to sign a promissory note agreeing to the terms of their forgivable loans.

Awards are renewable annually for Bull City Teaching Scholars who continue to meet eligibility requirements.
