DPS Inclement Weather Information

In case of inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary for DPS to may close, delay or dismiss schools early. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority when decisions must be made regarding school operations due to hazardous weather.

We review information from the National Weather Service, emergency management, local weather forecasters, and area law enforcement regarding road conditions. Additionally, our DPS personnel inspect our schools including parking lots and sidewalks and assess our bus routes throughout Durham County.

DPS Weather Decision and Notification Procedure

In the event of a delay, cancelation or early dismissal, Durham Public Schools will:

  • update DPSNC.net with

  • contact all of the local news media, 

  • send updates through social media: Twitter and Facebook 

  • Update school and district websites

  • Place automated phone calls to our families in English and Spanish.

  • Update message on DPS Parent Information Hotline (919) 560-9129.

Before and After School Activities
If school dismisses early or is canceled, all after-school programs and extracurricular activities will be canceled as well.

If schools open late, all before-school care programs will also open late by the same amount of time. 
Example: A one-hour school delay means that before-school care will open an hour late.

Makeup Days
Predetermined days have been planned into the calendar year for traditional & year-round, however they can change.  All makeup days will be announced on the DPS website and social media channels.
