The DPS Scholars-At-Work Program is a three- to five-day workplace immersion experience for eligible DPS students in grades 10-12. Participants spend part of Spring Break or summer in residence at a local company. Companies vary each year, but examples of past companies include:

Cisco – a multinational networking, telecommunications, and technology company

Environmental Protection Agency – a federal agency that protects human health and the environment

GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) a pharmaceutical company that develops medicines to cure or provide relief from pain and disease

Durham County – provides a variety of government services to Durham County residentsIf selected, you will be matched with a company and have the opportunity to meet and “shadow” employees in various departments, do hands-on tasks that expose you to the type of work carried out there and learn about the company’s exciting initiatives. Lunch and transportation from a DPS site to the worksite (and back) will be provided.

Through this program, you will gain valuable work experience within a reputable company, which you can add to your professional resume. Upon graduation from high school, you will be much more likely to be get hired for jobs if you have impressive work experience on your resume. You'll also gain exposure to the exciting world of work, and learn more about potential career paths for your future. 

Eligibility

Students must be in grades 10-12 and submit an application. All participants must submit a $25 registration fee to secure their spot and help cover the cost of lunch and transportation. If the registration fee presents a financial burden participants/guardians may contact Ondrea Austin to discuss scholarship options.
