Transfer Request

Student Transfer Requests (DPS School to DPS School)

The DPS Office of Student Assignment offers completely online Transfer Application processes for families requesting a transfer within Durham Public Schools (Inter-District Transfer).

Please complete the Transfer Application by selecting the appropriate school year below. Transfers are accepted each year from March 1-May 1. Any applications received after May 1 will be considered as a late transfer application and will be considered only if extenuating circumstances exist. Such circumstances include an unanticipated and significant change in the student’s status occurring after May 1 or other circumstances outside of the parent’s/guardian’s control that prevented them from meeting the application deadline. (Being unaware of the deadline is not considered an extenuating circumstance.)

Should you need assistance completing the Transfer Application or have any questions about the process, please contact the Office of Student Assignment at (919) 560-2059 and we will be happy to assist.

Elementary Program OPT-OUT TRANSFERS

The DPS Office of Student Assignment offers families of elementary students who reside in an attendance zone of an IB, Montessori, or year-round school the opportunity to opt-out of a program that may not suit their family’s needs. This request is to attend a school offering a traditional calendar or traditional instruction. Opt-out transfers will become available on March 1 of each school year. Families can rank at least two (2) options in their region for a traditional school, but final placements will be based on capacity at the requested school and grade level. The student will be provided with transportation if eligible.

Important: Once an opt-out transfer is approved, this will be your student’s official school assignment and will be binding for the duration of all grades at your approved school.  In rare cases of extenuating circumstances, you may submit a special assignment transfer request back to your base school.

Should you need assistance completing the Opt-Out Transfer Application or have any questions about the process, please contact Joy Bingham at (919) 560-3713.
