Spark Talk logo

The goal of the SPARK Talk series sponsored by Durham Public Schools is to educate and inspire our community, both inside and outside of our schools, including our teachers, administrators, students, parents, and local leaders and citizens. The SPARK Talk series is designed to elevate the conversation around education, helping community members to think deeper about educational practices and the way that education and the relationships that students form within their school communities can impact not only those students, but everyone in the larger community.

Topics for SPARK Talks

SPARK Talks cover a wide range of subjects, all connected to education. From innovative educational practices and thoughtful discussions on intersectionality to inspiring stories about students and teachers, every talk must relate to and enhance our understanding of education.

Hallmarks of a Successful SPARK Talk

Successful SPARK Talks are delivered by passionate and engaging speakers who create an intimate and compelling atmosphere. The goal is not to lecture or perform, but to captivate the audience, making them eager to listen and learn more.

Who can give a SPARK Talk?

Everyone is welcome to submit an idea for a SPARK Talk. Whether you're a teacher, administrator, student, parent, or community member, your voice and insights are valued.

How to Participate

To pitch your SPARK Talk idea, email Maria Bajgain, Director of Marketing, at maria_bajgain@dpsnc.net. Your pitch should include:

  • A brief overview of your topic (less than 500 words)

  • Key points you plan to cover

  • An explanation of why your topic is relevant to our audience

If your pitch is accepted, you will be asked to submit a draft of your speech, which should be between 5 and 10 minutes long. You will receive feedback and suggestions to refine your speech.

Once the draft is finalized, you will be invited to perform a run-through of your speech and will receive feedback on delivery and performance. Then a date will be scheduled to record your speech on a stage, possibly with a limited audience of staff members. The recording will be edited for quality and shared on the district’s YouTube and social media channels.

Join us to spark thoughtful dialogue, inspire change, and bring together our community through the SPARK Talk series!
