Game 1

Lakeview School, an alternative education setting, is in its second year of hosting its Intramural Athletic League, a unique program that brings students and staff together through friendly athletic competition. Traditionally, students at alternative schools like Lakeview have not been permitted to participate in sports, but Principal Dr. There McGowan has worked tirelessly to change that dynamic since taking over the school in 2018. Dr. McGowan’s vision was to create an environment where students were seen as more than just disciplinary cases and to offer them opportunities for positive engagement.

Breaking the Mold: Dr. McGowan’s Vision for Change

When Dr. McGowan became principal, she aimed to shift away from the punitive culture often associated with alternative schools. She sought to create a more inclusive, supportive atmosphere that focused on the development of the whole student, not just their academic performance. This vision set the stage for many innovative changes at Lakeview, including the introduction of the Intramural Athletic League.

A March Madness Tradition: The Beginning of Something Special

In 2021, Assistant Principal Michael Irving, in collaboration with Behavior Support Specialist Serena Tedder, took the initiative to launch a March Madness-themed faculty vs. student tournament. This event was more than just a competition; it was an opportunity to foster relationships between students and staff in a fun, low-pressure environment. The importance of students and staff interacting outside of the classroom cannot be overstated. These interactions help build trust, break down barriers, and create a more cohesive school community. Faculty and staff members served as coaches, fostering positive role models and mentorship opportunities for students.

Growing the Initiative: From Basketball to Soccer

What started as a single March Madness event quickly grew into something more. Mrs. Tedder, with her unwavering commitment to improving student engagement and morale, expanded the program to include basketball and soccer. Now, students participate in a variety of sports, where staff members continue to serve as coaches, role models, and mentors.

Impact on Student Morale and Attendance

The benefits of the program have been substantial. Not only has it boosted student and staff morale, but it has also had a positive impact on attendance. Many students, particularly those who may not have previously felt connected to the school community, have shown up more consistently to participate in the games. This increased attendance is a direct result of the sense of belonging and purpose that the sports programs have cultivated.

By fostering this sense of community, Lakeview’s Intramural Athletic League has become a vital part of the school’s culture, providing students with a chance to develop new skills, form positive relationships, and build self-confidence. As the league continues to grow and evolve, it will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of the school’s efforts to support and uplift its students.
