Durham Public Schools is proud to provide language assistance services to elementary, middle, and high school students. The English Learner Services Department is committed to providing English Learners the opportunity to participate effectively in the regular instructional program, by creating a learning environment that encourages students' pride in their cultural heritage and provides the cognitive and affective support to help them achieve academic success and prepare them for productive careers in the future.
The goal of English Learner Services is to support students to provide equitable access who speak other languages and are identified as needing language services to experience academic success both in the classroom and on state assessments. English Learner Services are designed both for newcomers to U.S. Schools as well as students who have been in U.S. schools for a few years. Students may be proficient in spoken English but may require support in reading and writing. It is important that all students are successful and that language assistance services are provided based upon need until they exit the program.
