Title I originated with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, the first major federal initiative to provide financial assistance to public schools. It was a central part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. In December 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law, reauthorizing and updating ESEA to meet the evolving needs of today’s students.

At its core, Title I is designed to support students performing below grade level or at risk of falling behind. Funding is used to implement programs and resources that help boost academic achievement and close performance gaps.

Brogden Middle School is one of 35 schools in Durham Public Schools that receive Title I funding. As a schoolwide Title I program, all students at Brogden benefit from the additional resources, instructional support, and services funded through this program.

A vital component of Title I is Family and Parent Engagement. At Brogden, we recognize that strong school-family partnerships are essential to student success. The Durham Public Schools Title I Program actively works to increase family involvement and empower parents to take an active role in their child’s education.
