The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a middle school honor society that recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship, aiming to foster well-rounded student leaders. The NJHS chapter at Brogden Middle School is a recognized and affiliated chapter of this esteemed national organization. Membership is open to students who exemplify excellence in the five pillars of NJHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship.

Pillars of NJHS

  • Scholarship is a commitment to learning and growing on an educational path.

  • Service

is seeking out and engaging in meaningful service, not simply doing acts of service to fulfill a school, district, or program requirement, or to collect hours.

  • Leadership

is carrying oneself with dignity and taking ownership and responsibility for one’s own actions and participation.

  • Character is valuing diverse cultures and building relationships that reflect love of self but also concern for others.

  • Citizenship is accepting one’s place and role in the community and seeking to understand the concerns and strengths of that community.

NJHS Induction 2024

NJHS Selection Process

Students in Grades 6–8 are eligible for consideration. To meet the scholarship requirement, a student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Each spring semester, students who meet the GPA criteria are invited to complete a Candidate Form, which allows them to highlight their leadership experience and community service involvement.

Applicants must also have completed a minimum of 10 community service hours at the time of application. These hours may be earned through activities within the community, church, or other service-based organizations.

To assess character, the NJHS faculty council conducts a thorough review that includes:

  • Examination of school disciplinary records

  • Teacher feedback based on professional observations of the student’s service, leadership, and character

The faculty council, composed of five members appointed by the principal, reviews all Candidate Forms and supporting materials. A majority vote is required for selection into NJHS. Students are notified of their selection status according to a set schedule each January.

Induction and Membership Expectations

Students selected for membership are formally inducted during a special NJHS Induction Ceremony held at the school. Once inducted, members are expected to continue demonstrating excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship throughout their time at Brogden.
