CTE Teacher of the Year
Ms. Ellis has been named the Neal Middle School CTE Teacher of the Year for 2023! Ms. Ellis is Neal Middle School's business and entrepreneurship teacher, and she plays an essential role in our Career and Technical Education department. Congratulations, Ms. Ellis!

Excellence In Education
Mr. Virgil, a Social Studies teacher on the 8th grade Robins team, has been named the Neal Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2023, and Ms. King, Neal Middle School's dance teacher, has been named the Neal Middle School Beginning Teacher of the Year for 2023. Congratulations, Mr. Virgil and Ms. King!

Principal Announcement
Mr. Terrence Covington has been officially named principal of Neal Middle School! Mr. Covington has been serving as interim principal since April of 2022. Congratulations, Mr. Covington!

Teacher of the Year
Mr. Virgil has been named the Neal Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2023! Mr. Virgil is a Social Studies teacher on the 8th grade Robins team, and he is an essential member of the Neal Family who leads by example and helps to build up those around him. Congratulations, Mr. Virgil!
In response to his award, Mr. Virgil said, "We come together to ensure that every student has access to the best educational opportunities and support they need to succeed. It's amazing to be a part of such an amazing team of educators, and to know that our hard work and dedication is paying off. Being awarded Teacher of the Year is a testament to the collaborative effort put in by all of us, and I'm grateful to be part of it."

Beginning Teacher of the Year
Ms. King has been named the Neal Middle School Beginning Teacher of the Year for 2023! Ms. King is Neal Middle School's dance teacher, and she has built our dance program from the ground up and has played an integral part in expanding our performing arts programming at Neal. Congratulations, Ms. King!

Guidance Counselor of the Year
Congratulations to Ms. Bennetone on being named Durham Public Schools' Middle School Counselor of the Year! Ms. Bennetone serves as Neal's 6th grade counselor and goes above and beyond to serve the Neal community. To learn more about the other award winners, click here.

New Interim Principal
Mr. Terrence Covington has been named interim principal of Neal Middle School, where he serves as the seventh-grade assistant principal. Covington coordinated and oversaw the school’s RISE Summer Camp, created the school’s Alternative Learning Center, and took Neal Middle School to victory in the national Schools of the Future competition in 2019 after making it to the finals in 2016. He has previously been a school counselor, community support worker, and youth services behavioral specialist. He earned multiple Master of Arts degrees from North Carolina Central University. Congratulations, Mr. Covington!

Teacher of the Year
Mr. Fashoro has been named the Neal Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2022! Mr. Fashoro is an ESL teacher on the 8th grade Icons team, and he is an essential member of the Neal Family who ensures that the needs of all of our students are met. Congratulations, Mr. Fashoro!

Beginning Teacher of the Year
Mr. Molthrop has been named the Neal Middle School Beginning Teacher of the Year for 2022! Mr. Molthrop is a first-year CTE teacher who is revitalizing Neal Middle School's robotics program. Congratulations, Mr. Molthrop!
