As a rising 9th grader, if you are interested in applying to any DPS high school magnet programs or CTE pathways please complete the lottery application process online. Visit for more information. The application window opens up online Monday, January 10th. Use the school locator tool if you need help determining your child's base high school.
Attend virtual or in-person tours and information sessions for ALL Durham Public School High Schools. For all date/times during January-February visit this website.
Lottery Timeline:
January 10th – Lottery application OPENS for all Magnet / Pathways
The parent or legal guardian/custodian must have a valid email address or phone number to create an online account, submit an application, and receive application updates in the application portal: SmartChoice Application Account at this website.
February 4th – Lottery Period CLOSES @ 5 pm
March 1st – Lottery notification results emailed and posted on the Parent Dashboard of the parent/guardian SmartChoice Application Account at this website.
March 4th – Deadline to accept or decline lottery seat
Late March – ALL students register for district school (won’t affect lottery status)
Application Access and Assistance:
Use a SmartPhone, Tablet, or Computer (may be accessed at the Public Library) to access the SmartChoice Application site at the application website.
